City of Winston-Salem conveys four lots to Habitat for Humanity

The City of Winston Salem recently gifted Forsyth County Habitat for Humanity land for the development of low-income housing.

At their meeting last month the Winston-Salem City Council adopted a resolution conveying four vacant lots in the Cleveland Avenue Neighborhood to Forsyth County Habitat for Humanity.

The resolution passed unanimously, with Northeast Ward Councilwoman Barbara Hanes Burke being recused due to her position on Habitat for Humanity’s board of directors.

Before retaining homeownership, enrolled families must complete courses in financial literacy and devote 300 or more hours volunteering with the organization or other community partners.

The lots are in an area the city has targeted to increase affordable housing. The city’s Choice Neighborhood Initiative provides a blueprint to increase housing availability in the Cleveland Avenue Neighborhood.

The more than $40 million project is being paid for with federal and city dollars and will result in hundreds of new housing units.
