Greensboro Transit Agency Expands Sunday Bus Routes

The Greensboro Transit Agency or GTA is expanding services for riders on Sundays. The new hours come in response to long-time rider requests.

Beginning July 4, GTA routes on Sundays will expand in two ways. The number of routes will more than double from 7 to 17, and buses will run four hours later from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

GTA's Kevin Elwood says with fewer COVID-19 restrictions, the timing for this expansion could not have been better.

"For many people, whether it is entertainment, shopping, employment, worship — any of those type of things that they enjoy doing on Sundays — they were very limited in terms of geography and also in terms of time," says Elwood. "So, now we're able to respond to that long-held request by the community."

Elwood says the change was high on the list of service requests and made possible by a recent federally funded Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement grant. He says next on the list is the implementation of crosstown routes, enabling riders to avoid time-consuming downtown bus transfers on the way to their final destinations.
