Guilford County Reports Record Absentee Voting Numbers

GERRY BROOME/AP

Guilford County is contending with a surge in absentee voting, but officials say they're keeping up with the onslaught.

About 40,000 absentee ballots have already been returned to the Guilford County Board of Elections. Charlie Collicut, the board's director, says that's a huge uptick from the last presidential election.

“In 2016, we only had 10,000," says Collicut. "So we're already four times what we saw in all of 2016 with more time to go.”

Collicut says they've had to bring in a night crew of workers in order to process all of those ballots.

As for early in-person voting numbers, Collicut says they are set to outpace 2016. But, county totals have leveled off in the past few days.

“But I worry that this is going to grow exponentially by the end of the week," says Collicut. "And we'll have to deal with that.”

Collicut says they're also preparing for an influx of absentee ballot requests – the deadline is Tuesday.
