Regional health care systems are implementing temporary hospital visitor restrictions due to a rise in flu cases in the region.

Starting Wednesday, children under 12 will be barred from visiting patients at Wake Forest Baptist Health, Cone Health, and Novant Health hospitals. People 12 and older are also asked to refrain from visiting if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Exceptions may be made in special circumstances.

In a statement, Wake Forest Baptist Health officials said they will continue to monitor flu rates in the area and further restrict visitors if needed, or lift the restrictions when the outbreak subsides.

Atrium Health, Blue Ridge Health, Caromont Health, and Randolph Health are also among the regional hospital systems imposing the new rules Wednesday.
