Indian Automaker Considers NC, Other States For New Plant

A global automaker is eyeing North Carolina as a possible site for a new manufacturing plant.

Mahindra Automotive North America is looking at several locations for its second manufacturing plant in the United States. Company officials say a couple of them are in western North Carolina.

It's unclear if the 1500-acre Greensboro-Randolph megasite is being considered. Two years ago, it was a top contender for a Toyota-Mazda car plant, but the company chose Alabama instead. North Carolina was willing to offer more than a billion dollars in incentives to bring them to the state.

Mahindra also has operations in Auburn Hill, Michigan. The new plant would support operations there and create other vehicles for the U.S. market. The company says the facility would also manufacture mail delivery trucks for the U.S. Postal Service if it can secure a contract with the agency.

The new plant would create up to 2,000 jobs.

Mahindra Automotive says it's also considering sites in South Carolina, Texas, Arizona, and Michigan.
