The details of a Duke Energy coal ash settlement will soon be laid out to the public in Virginia and North Carolina.
Meetings scheduled for August aim to explain an agreement between government officials and Duke Energy. This will effectively wrap up the restoration obligations faced by the country's largest electricity company over a massive spilling of burned coal residue from five years ago.
State and Federal agencies are announcing two public information sessions to answer questions. The first will be in Danville, Virginia on August 6th, and then on August 7th in Eden, North Carolina.
The leak of waste that Duke Energy stored after burning coal for electricity coated around 70 miles along the Dan River, on the border of both states.
A spokesperson from Duke Energy says the company won't disclose how much it has spent on cleanup efforts. But the final tally will include buying more than 500 acres from both states to incorporate into parks.
