A Greensboro community project that's been years in the making is finally a reality. There's a new place in the city to master your ollies, kickflips, and grinds.
The Latham Skate Park is now open. The city held a ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration over the weekend at the site located on Hill Street, north of downtown.
The 10,000 square foot recreational spot is complete with some rad features. It has an 8-foot flow bowl, a vert wall, rails, and other features. The skating community has waited more than a decade for the concrete park.
Wade Walcutt is director of the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. He says skaters were part of an advisory team that helped design the space and pick the location.
“You're going to see every background, every demographic, every age all there together doing the same thing and there's not too many places in the world you can go anymore where you see that kind of genuine diversity and people just really enjoying themselves and being happy in this kind of location,” says Walcutt.
City leaders say residents are encouraged to bring their skateboards, inline skates, BMX bikes, scooters or wheel chairs to try out the new park. Helmets and pads are required.
This is the second of two skate parks the city has opened in the last six months. Glenwood Skate Spot opened earlier this year. Both were built with voter-approved bond money. The cost for the projects was around $575,000.
