The planned development at Winston-Salem's BB&T Ballpark came under fire yesterday. Some city council members wanted more affordable housing included.
Brand Properties wants to develop an area north and east of BB&T Ballpark with a mix of luxury apartments, retail & office space, and two parking decks.
According to the Winston-Salem Journal, the city had previously agreed to buy the parking decks from Brand Properties but explicit approval hasn't been made.
Impeding this, the council is considering a new policy requiring developers to build “workforce” housing as part of any housing in which city funds are invested.
Council Member Derwin Montgomery said it wasn't clear yet whether the policy would even apply, since city money wasn't paying for housing, just parking. But Council Member D.D. Adams said she would continue to bring up the issue of housing diversity on any project the city considers.
Discussions will continue over the next few months.
