National Black Theatre To Expand Teen Offerings

Kathryn Mobley

One of Winston-Salem's most celebrated stage attractions will be growing this year.

The National Black Theatre Festival will use the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds to provide entertainment aimed at teenagers on the festival's weekend nights.

Brian McLaughlin says the idea to expand is the result of a brainstorming session following the 2013 festival.

“We learned that so many segments of the city, they want to be involved, and they may not buy theater tickets. So what can we do to involve those people who might never sit in a theater?”

Festival organizers also announced this year's honorary co-chairs. They are Darnell Williams and Debbi Morgan. The actors are perhaps best known for their portrayal of the couple Angie and Jessie on the ABC soap opera “All My Children.”

The festival is scheduled to run from Aug 3rd through the 8th.
