Holiday's End Marked By Continued Cold

A map from the National Weather Service office in Blacksburg, Va. shows threats from cold weather across Northwest North Carolina and Southwest Virginia.

A cold snap that has hit much of the South along with other parts of the country didn't spare North Carolina.

In the Triad we'll get a break - if you can call it that - on Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to rise to the mid-30s.That's according to Jake Ruckman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va.

But early Thursday it will be back to the frigid conditions we've had for the last few days, which are running 10 to 20 degrees below normal for this time of year.

Ruckman says a swirling low-pressure system making its way along the coast will pull down the arctic weather, bringing temperatures here back to the 20s and teens. If you're looking for snow, though, you may be out of luck: it's been dry and is expected to stay that way in the Triad.

Forecasters say it's likely to be late into the weekend before we see temperatures rising to the mid-40s.

In mountain counties, a weather advisory is expected to be in place for most of the rest of the week, with wind chills potentially dropping below zero.
