City of Greensboro begins second year of pallet shelter program

The city of Greensboro started its pallet shelter program for individuals without housing this week.

Assistant City Manager Nasha McCray told the city council on Monday all of the structures are now in place for the Doorway Project's second year. The program is run by the Interactive Resource Center and allows for 30 pallet homes to serve as interim housing shelters.

McCray said the first round of residents are moving in this week. The initiative ends in April.

"It's only meant to be a temporary, low-barrier method that we put in place to help our unhoused during the winter cold months," McCray said.

The city council previously approved $190,000 to fund the program through the winter. According to a city report, the shelters housed over 70 people and maintained an occupancy rate of more than 90% last year.
