Sauratown mountain

Even with Helene’s massive rains, most of the mountain counties and Piedmont are under abnormally dry conditions.

The wildfire on Sauratown Mountain in Stokes County is almost fully contained, according to state fire officials. The North Carolina Forest Service says the fire was almost 90 percent contained as of Sunday night.

Guilford County Ranger Jimmy Holt says that in addition to regional fire departments, crews from Oregon, Utah, Washington State, and Montana are assisting in suppressing the blaze, which he estimates has grown to almost 350 acres.

In Stokes County, a wildfire has led to evacuation plans for some residents. As of Sunday afternoon, no injuries have been reported.
