Surry County Schools is implementing a clear bag policy for athletic events starting next year.

The district says the new clear bag procedures are meant to ensure a secure environment for those attending sporting events.

Beginning on Jan. 1, visitors will only be permitted to bring clear and transparent bags, or small clutches. But all bags may be subject to searches.

Athletes, coaches, and officials participating in the events are exempt from following these procedures.

"Our priority remains the safety and security of all individuals attending our athletic events," said Superintendent Travis Reeves in a press release. "These procedures are designed to ensure everyone's safety and streamline the entry process, making it consistent with the practices you might have encountered at college stadiums and other large event venues.”

The policy is also consistent with what some other local districts have been implementing. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, Guilford County, and Lexington City Schools all approved clear bag policies in the last few years.
