Greensboro’s highest-paid city employee doesn’t actually work at city hall. And yet, they still make more than many of the city’s top executives. That’s according to a WFDD review of publicly available salary data.

The review shows that Matt Brown, the managing director of the Greensboro Coliseum, is the city’s highest-paid employee. His salary of just over $387,000 is about $100,000 more than the city’s second-highest earner — the city manager. And it’s nearly double what the police chief makes.

The coliseum’s deputy director is also among the city’s top 10 highest earners, though he makes about $200,000 less than Brown.

The coliseum is owned by the City of Greensboro, and a city spokesperson said state law prevented him from commenting on how employee salaries are determined.  But in an emailed statement he said Greensboro’s compensation program is intended to effectively recruit and retain employees and “maintain financial stewardship.”

Winston-Salem’s highest-paid employee is City Manager Lee Garrity, who takes home about $250,000 per year, over $100,000 less than Greensboro’s top earner.
