The nonprofit The Servant Center is acquiring and renovating 1915 Boulevard Street in order to provide 43 beds for the community. The Greensboro nonprofit helps the unhoused and disabled, and in particular veterans, to become independent.

The city council voted unanimously to support the effort with American Rescue Plan Act and federal Community Development Block Grant funding. The Servant Center Executive Director Shanna Reece said the project is a needed resource.

"There are people with medical needs staying in the hospital that are experiencing homelessness, have nowhere to go, or people being put at Center City Park," Reece says. "So we realize that would be the perfect opportunity to bring medical respite to Greensboro, we don't have anything like that here."

City officials have also been exploring other ways to tackle homelessness including the recent launch of a $21 million fund to incentivize developers to build more affordable housing.
