The City of Greensboro announced the resignation of a key staff member.

Tom Carruthers has been the city attorney of Greensboro since 2014. Late Tuesday, City Council accepted his resignation, which is effective immediately.

His reason for leaving wasn't disclosed in a press release, but Carruthers said he's proud of his accomplishments, his staff, and is honored to have served the city.

He's been a key figure in negotiating major business deals in Greensboro, including some new downtown parking decks.

Last year, the council approved a 3 percent merit raise for Carruthers, bumping his salary to $180,000.

In the coming months, members will conduct a national search to fill the position. City Council has appointed Jamiah Waterman to serve as the acting City Attorney.
