Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson announced Wednesday at a press conference the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was reviewing allegations against former city attorney Chuck Watts.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the alleged business transactions of former Greensboro City Attorney Chuck Watts.

Watts announced his retirement last week.

Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson said at a press conference on Wednesday that on July 1, the department was contacted about concerns regarding the legality of some of Watts' business transactions.

"The police department was made aware of these allegations, and they were made aware from internal city leadership," he said.

Thompson said GPD contacted the state bureau because it was critical to have an independent review. The State Bureau will then meet with the local district attorney to decide whether or not to launch a full investigation.

No criminal charges have been brought forth yet.

Thompson said the review is separate from any other potential SBI investigation.
