Yadkin County is redrawing its fire districts to adjust services after a contract dispute with the Boonville Community Volunteer Fire Department.
The BFD's board of directors voted unanimously not to approve a contract from the county. It would've required the removal of the current chief and assistant chief within 30 days of signing.
BFD claims no reason was given as to why leadership needed to step down. It further said in a statement that as of July 1, it can no longer provide services.
In March, some Boonville residents voiced concerns at a Yadkin County Commissioners meeting about the department's response times and management problems. BFD leadership at the meeting defended the department, pointing to a lack of staff.
The county said in a press release on Monday that the stipulations were needed because of the department's "financial health and leadership jeopardizing the services provided to the taxpayers."
Surrounding volunteer fire departments are now providing emergency aid to the Boonville district.
BFD said it plans to continue negotiations with county leaders to reach a new agreement.
