Officials have announced public safety plans ahead of North Carolina A&T State University’s 100th homecoming.
Leaders from Guilford County, Greensboro and the university are partnering to address issues like parking, security and road closures. Over 200,000 people are expected to arrive in the city later this month to celebrate A&T’s "Greatest Homecoming On Earth," also known as GHOE.
At a press conference this week, Greensboro Police Chief Kamran Afzal said hundreds of additional officers will be assigned to the celebrations.
“We want concerns addressed before [the] event begins, with attention to crowd management and access for emergency personnel," Afzal said. "Hosting a celebration of this size takes cooperation, and we appreciate the work our partners are doing.”
Sheriff Danny Rogers urged attendees to plan ahead, and use a designated driver or rideshare service to avoid driving while impaired. The department’s DWI task force will be monitoring roads.
Visitors will be able to text emergency services by scanning one of the QR codes that will be widely posted on sidewalks and flyers.
N.C. A&T’s homecoming activities kick off on Oct. 25.
