There are now plans for the former Sears location at Greensboro’s Friendly Center. The site has sat empty since the store was demolished in 2024.

Now the lot may be filled by a new seven-acre housing development.

According to documents from the city’s Technical Review Committee, officials approved a plan for 270 multi-family apartments early last month.

Hines, an international real estate company, is behind the project. But planning is being led by a Charlotte-based architecture and design firm called LandDesign.

The development comes as officials push to increase Greensboro’s housing capacity through its Road to 10,000 initiative.
