Greensboro is getting a new professional hockey team.

They’ll be known as the Greensboro Gargoyles, and players will wear purple, gold, and black. The name was created based on community input — over 2,000 fans submitted suggestions.

In a release, team officials said the logo will be a “stone monster that watches over and protects the city of Greensboro.”

The Gargoyles will play in the ECHL, a minor league. It’s the first time the Gate City has had a professional hockey team since 2004, when the Greensboro Generals folded.

A head coach is set to be announced in late spring or early summer of this year. The season will officially begin in October.
