N.C. Rep. Ashton Wheeler Clemmons to step down

North Carolina Rep. Ashton Wheeler Clemmons is resigning from her position to take a job in the University of North Carolina system.

Clemmons, who has represented Guilford County since 2019, is currently the second-highest ranking Democrat in the House.

A former elementary school teacher, Clemmons championed several education-related initiatives during her time in office and founded the legislature’s Early Childhood Caucus.

She’s vacating her seat to serve as an associate vice president of preschool through 12th grade (P12) strategy and policy for the UNC system.

Clemmons is the second house member to resign this week – Republican Representative Jason Saine announced plans to step down Monday.
