A student scholarship research group recently released a new study looking at how much student loan debt people carry.

According to the research from Scholaroo, North Carolina ranks 8th in the nation in terms of individual student debt. Borrowers in the state have an average of just under $38,000 in outstanding college loans. Most balances range between $20,000-$40,000.

Using publicly available data, and a survey of 1,000 students, Scholaroo determined that country-wide, people aged 25 to 34 hold a narrow majority of the overall debt.

Surrounding states Virginia and South Carolina come in even higher on the index, in 3rd and 4th place respectively.
