UNC System leaders have named Brian Cole as new interim chancellor for the School of the Arts.

Cole has been the dean of the university's School of Music for the last three years, overseeing operations programs on the graduate, undergraduate, and high school levels.

He has conducted orchestras and opera both in the United States and internationally. At the School of the Arts, he's been executive director of two pre-professional graduate institutes — the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute and the Chrysalis Chamber Music Institute.

He'll replace Lindsay Bierman, the chancellor for the last five years. Bierman announced in May that he'd be stepping down to become chief executive of UNC-TV Public Media North Carolina.

Cole takes over at UNCSA August 1.
