Across the Blue Ridge #154 - Jason Cade

Fiddlin’ Bill Hensley (L, Ben Shahn, Library of Congress) and Jason Cade (R, Jamie Derevere) represent two ends of our story this week: the historic old time players whose music is preserved in early recordings, and today’s performers interpreting the old music and creating their own.

Jason Cade is a Georgia fiddler with roots all over the south, an artist who reveres the historic fiddlers of the past while contributing new interpretations, energy and new tunes to a longstanding tradition. His latest album, with Rob McMaken and several other friends, is Hog-Eyed Man – Old World Music of the Southern Appalachians. On this week's show, it becomes the string through our story of musical evolution in the south.  We hear fascinating performances of the past from greats including Fiddlin' Bill Hensley, Marcus Martin, Manco Snead, Earl Murphy and others – plus tracks from Cade's new album and recordings from some of his contemporaries. Be sure to take in this fascinating Across the Blue Ridge episode.
