Across the Blue Ridge #150 - Classic Songs and Tunes, New Recordings

Paul Brown
Music with West Virginia connections features in this week’s show – from antique fiddle tunes to duet singing to a new flatpicking guitar album from Robin Kessinger and Tyler Grant.

This week's show ranges across the southern mountains with some truly wonderful fiddle tunes and songs.  We start with the late North Carolina fiddler Jim Shumate, the first fiddler with Flatt & Scruggs – a consummate artist who fairly quickly decided he'd rather be at home with his family than out on the road.  But his recordings really set much of the template for bluegrass fiddling.  We hear songs and tunes of one of his predecessors in country fiddle entertainment, Arthur Smith … and then songs and tunes from West Virginia, where music traditions continue in strength.  We check out a new duo guitar album from West Virginia native Robin Kessinger and Tyler Grant, and hear the respected fiddler Bobby Taylor and one of his heroes the late Edden Hammons.  This is a great hour of listening, filled with connections across geography and time.
