Sports fans are mourning the death of Mike Hogewood, one of the Triad's best-known broadcasters.

Nancy Hogewood said her husband was at home Wednesday when he died of a heart attack in his sleep.

Although he was no stranger to being on the sidelines of a Carolina Panthers game or trackside at a NASCAR race, it was the fields and courts of the Atlantic Coast Conference where Hogewood really made his mark. He became familiar to local viewers as the sports director of WFMY and to an even wider audience calling ACC matches for Raycom Sports.

He brought to the games an infectious passion and folksy demeanor that endeared him to fans. He left WFMY in the early 2000s but remained active in the sports scene, calling games as a freelancer for Fox Sports South and others before retiring in 2013.

Hogwood's death prompted an outpouring of memories and condolences on social media by ACC fans, former athletes and college officials.

Mike Hogewood was 63. A funeral is scheduled for Monday in Greensboro.
