Across the Blue Ridge #123 - A Fiddlers’ Convention, New Recordings, and More

Paul Brown
Flatfoot dancers get out onto the floor at Surry Community College in North Carolina as the Slate Mountain Ramblers perform in the band contest at the Surry Old-Time Fiddlers’ Convention, co-sponsored by Across the Blue Ridge. The annual convention season has opened in the mountain south, continuing a long tradition of social get-togethers around roots music.

An action-packed and music-packed program this week includes fiddle music from Aubrey Haynie, a classic from the Carter Family – and a visit to the Surry Old Time Fiddlers' Convention in Dobson, North Carolina, where ATBR host Paul Brown finds musicians to record and people who sing the praises of the southern fiddlers' convention tradition as this year's season gets underway.  Finally, a few recordings from the Old Time Tiki Parlour label.  We hear brothers Travis and Trevor Stuart; Dan Gellert; label producer David Bragger with Susan Platz; and our own Paul Brown, whose album on the label is just out.
