Across the Blue Ridge #56- Zoe & Cloyd

Paul Brown
John Cloyd Miller and Natalya Zoe Weinstein are Zoe & Cloyd, a North Carolina-based roots music duo embodying the modern American musical story of multiple backgrounds and influences.

This week we visit with Zoe & Cloyd, an acclaimed North Carolina roots duo whose combined musical heritage includes old time mountain, bluegrass, rock, classical and klezmer. John Cloyd Miller was raised in the western piedmont of the Old North State. He's a grandson of Jim Shumate, a star fiddler in the first bluegrass generation.  Miller's wife Natalya Zoe Weinstein grew up in Massachusetts in a family including jazz and klezmer musicians.  They met along their path to increasing involvement with southern traditional music.  Their performances often contain many types of music they've been exposed to, and the award-winning songs they write speak to both history and current experience.  On this week's program, hear their interview with host Paul Brown, and lots of great music including selections from a show at Muddy Creek Music Hall. You'll also hear songs and tunes from their duo album, Equinox. The intense yet fluid fiddling of Jim Shumate bookends the hour, giving us a sense of tradition, continuity and change.
