Across the Blue Ridge #48 - A Thanksgiving Collection of Great Songs and Tunes

Brandon Ray Kirk
West Virginia fiddler Wilson Douglas played in a decidedly old time style, with unexpected crooks and turns in his phrasing and timing.

Thanksgiving is a time when many people think of hearth and home. This week's Across the Blue Ridge brings us home and to thoughts of home. You'll hear a selection of songs and tunes that evoke a sense of family, place, tradition, love, and sometimes loss or homesickness. We hear from some outstanding tradition bearers of the past and present, including E.C. and Orna Ball of Grassy Creek, NC with their comforting sound; and West Virginia fiddler Wilson Douglas, who brought unique phrasing, melody and timing to each of his old time tunes. He even played a Scottish tune known better in New England than in the mountain south. We'll hear that, plus a New England version. Classic harmony singing abounds this week, with performances by the Delmore Brothers, The Carter Family, James Leva & Carol Elizabeth Jones, and more.
