Across the Blue Ridge #42 - Emmylou Harris on tour to help refugees

Bob Carmichael, emmylouharris.com
Emmylou Harris is on tour helping raise awareness of the plight of refugees – and helping raise money to educate refugees.

Country music star Emmylou Harris isn't focused solely on her art, as many musicians are. She's demonstrated a deep social conscience throughout her career, and in her life offstage. This fall she's touring to raise awareness of the plight of refugees as people flee conflict and hunger in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere. She also wants to raise money to educate a record number of refugees through the Jesuit Refugee Service. We find out more about this tour, which transmits echoes of her 1990s tour to help rid southeast Asia of landmines following the Vietnam war. Also on this week's show, our reliable selection of great old time, bluegrass, country and gospel music. This time around we hear from some banjo songsters; from Jerry Douglas; Bruce Molsky and Allison de Groot; and the ethereal-sounding Kentucky banjo player Morgan Sexton, among others.
