Across the Blue Ridge #41 - Kay Justice, Alice Gerrard, and Some Bluegrass and Old Time Classics

Paul Brown
Kay Justice (R) and Alice Gerrard (L) are two of the finest singers in traditional country, bluegrass and old time music today.

This week our special guests are Kay Justice of Abingdon, VA; and Alice Gerrard of Durham, NC. These two singers inspire thousands of others to give full voice to the traditional side of bluegrass, gospel, old time, bluegrass and folk music. Their unpretentious yet rich voices, and their straightforward and always good-humored performance style are on full display in a show recorded at Muddy Creek Music Hall in Winston-Salem, NC in 2016. Kay grew up listening to church music, country and folk music, and was smitten by old time mountain music when she discovered it in college. Alice, raised in California, discovered first popular folk music and then traditional old time mountain music in college as well. She went on to embrace bluegrass too, and was a pioneering woman performer in the bluegrass scene of the late 1950s through 1980s. Her album Follow the Music was nominated for a Grammy award in 2015. Also on this week's show, classics of bluegrass and old time music from the Brainstormers, the Camp Creek Boys, Jeff Little Trio and others.
