After a community vote, two forested islands in the Yadkin River now have a name. More than 250 people weighed in, with a write-in choice coming out on top.

The property is environmentally and historically significant. Native Americans and Revolutionary War soldiers knew these woods. Freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad also passed through.

Most of the 311 acres are forested, including a long section bordering the river. The land features steep hills with abundant trees and rhododendrons leading to bluffs overlooking the water.

The move keeps the land out of the hands of developers in a growing part of the county near a leg of the planned western loop of the Northern Beltway.

A new hiking trail in the heart of Winston-Salem will preserve 93 acres of farmland and bridge two neighborhoods long divided by the land.

Hundreds of acres of land along the Dan River will soon be open to the public for recreation, river access, and plans are in place to eventually make the land part of the state’s nearly 1,200-mile-long Mountains-to-Sea Trail.

The Piedmont Triad is set to benefit from $100,000 in environmental grants. The funding was announced on Thursday by state Attorney General Josh Stein.…
