Grandfather Mountain is one of North Carolina’s most iconic landscapes, and one of the highest peaks along the Blue Ridge. But just a few miles southwest, there’s a Grandmother Mountain. WFDD's Amy Diaz set out to learn more about it for Carolina Curious.

The effort to protect Grandmother Mountain dates back three decades.

In the 1990s, Howard Knob was sold to a private investor, sparking a conservation movement that led to the founding of what’s now the Blue Ridge Conservancy.

The 33-acre park will feature trails, a pavilion, a boardwalk and a wetland.

New River Conservancy Executive Director Andrew Downs says conserving the land will safeguard water quality and increase access for recreational activities.

The effort to preserve Paddy Mountain was a community-wide response that included individuals as well as the town of West Jefferson and Ashe County.
