The state Senate is scheduled to vote this week to require more public notice for property tax increases. The bill stems from higher tax bills that result from a property revaluation process. Some local governments aren't lowering tax rates when property values increase to create a revenue-neutral rate.

Projects include the collection and disposal of non-hazardous debris from public and private properties, as well as the clearing and management of debris from streambanks, floodplains, farmland and parks.

A temporary curfew for teens is now in effect in Winston-Salem after a divided City Council vote. The measure bars most minors from public places between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. through Oct. 12, though there are exceptions for work, emergencies and school activities.
