North Carolina's GOP-dominated legislature swept six bills into law Tuesday with veto overrides, including one barring promotion of certain beliefs in state government workplaces that some lawmaker

The promotion of certain beliefs that some North Carolina lawmakers have likened to “critical race theory" is on track to be banned in state government workplaces, under a bill that received final legislative approval on Tuesday.

A previously vetoed proposal advancing in the North Carolina House would restrict how teachers can discuss certain racial topics in the classroom amid a national GOP crusade against ideas they associate with "critical race theory."

Florida rejected an Advancement Placement course on African American studies, saying it's "filled with" critical race theory. But scholars who helped create the course say it's not in lesson plans.

The rejected books make up a record 41% of the 132 books submitted for review, the Florida Department of Education said in a statement.

The lawmakers withheld their votes as the state Senate passed a bill that would ban schools from teaching critical race theory. The education superintendent has said it is not being taught in schools.

State Rep. Matt Krause launched an inquiry into school library books on topics like race and gender earlier this fall. A San Antonio district says it's reviewing some 400 titles that were on his list.

In the latest instance, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster calls on the state's department of education to look into banning a book about queer identity, saying the content is sexually explicit.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott asked the state's association of school boards to review and remove any school library books with "pornography or other inappropriate content." It's part of a larger trend.
