There's some good financial news from North Carolina's Medicaid division. The agency say it's ending with a positive cash balance for the second fiscal year in a row.
Division of Medical Assistance leaders announced Tuesday that Medicaid had $131 million in cash available June 30. That's more than twice the $64 million cash balance from one year ago.
State Medicaid director Dave Richard says the positive balance reflects better spending forecasts and a good working relationship with the General Assembly. The agency previously faced shortfalls.
North Carolina Medicaid spends more than $13 billion annually. The state pays about one-fourth of that.
WRAL-TV reports the leftover funds may help Gov. Pat McCrory's administration as it negotiates with the General Assembly over whether his agency should retain oversight of the massive health care program.
House and Senate Republicans remain at odds over how to pay for Medicaid services going forward and who should oversee the program.
