Tobacco company ITG Brands has announced it will lay off about 375 employees in June. But the workforce reduction doesn't come as a surprise.

The layoffs at ITG's Greensboro plant are part of anticipated planned cutbacks in production.

The News and Record reports this is part of a deal Reynolds American had set up with Lorillard, the former owner of the plant.

The arrangement called for ITG workers to continue making Newport cigarettes for a limited time.

Workers were told in February that the reciprocal manufacturing could end as early as June.

A company spokesman says ITG will continue to work with union representatives to reduce the impact of the layoffs.
