The city of Greensboro would need to spend $16 million a year to maintain its road through 2040, according to a presentation to city council on Thursday.

According to the presentation, Greensboro's roads received a poor rating, and the city currently spends $7 million a year on them.

Transportation Director Hanna Cockburn says the street system is the third largest in the state.

"Our streets arguably are one of the largest assets the city owns and maintains, totaling a value of more than a billion dollars," she says.

Cockburn says moving forward, the city could use bonds or reserve additional funding for maintenance. She says focusing on preservation of roads that are already in good condition could also be key.

"Right now, we're essentially focusing on poor and very poor roads for us to address with resurfacing," she says.

According to the presentation, if Greensboro doesn't increase spending, the ratings of its roads are projected to fall.
