The House majority leader is leaving the North Carolina General Assembly. NC Rep. Edgar Starnes (R-Caldwell) departs to take a job with the office of State Treasurer Janet Cowell.

Starnes says he'll resign his seat at noon Tuesday, the day before lawmakers return to Raleigh for a one-day housekeeping session. Starnes said Monday he'll become a senior policy adviser for Cowell and serve as her liaison to the Republican-led legislature.

Cowell is a Democrat. Starnes is succeeding fellow GOP ex-Rep. Bill McGee as legislative liaison. Starnes is from Caldwell County and says the job was finalized just last week. Starnes served one term in the 1980s and continuously since 1997.

Caldwell County Republicans will pick a replacement to serve Starnes' upcoming two-year term.
