FCC Announces Funding To Help Bring Broadband To Rural NC

 

The Federal Communications Commission says a North Carolina-based company has accepted nearly $2 million in support from a special fund to help support and expand broadband to its customers in rural counties.

A statement from the FCC says the money from the Connect America Fund will enable Windstream to deliver broadband to approximately 7,000 rural homes and businesses in North Carolina where the cost of broadband deployment might otherwise be prohibitive.

New Museum Celebrates Black Theater History In NC

A Winston-Salem museum that showcases the history of black theater in North Carolina and across the country is officially open to the public. Organizers say the museum will also serve as a key tourist attraction for the city.

The National Black Theatre Festival Museum and Hall of Fame is the brainchild of Larry Leon Hamlin.  In 1989, the actor and performance company owner started the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem. Hamlin died in 2007, but his idea for a central museum in the city lived on. Now three major arts organizations are working together to make his dream a reality.

 

Business 40 Beautification In Jeopardy

 

The state Department of Transportation has agreed to improve retaining walls along the downtown corridor. But a new provision of the budget would require the city to pay back the DOT for those improvements.

City Manager Lee Garrity says that would cost the city $4 million it doesn't have for the project. He says it will lose some of its appeal without those improvements.

North Carolina House Gives Preliminary OK To Debt Proposal

A nearly $3 billion bond package that would go to North Carolina citizens this fall has received tentative House approval.

The measure backed Wednesday in a 79-30 vote would borrow essentially the same amount of money Gov. Pat McCrory wants to borrow for roads and government infrastructure. The House shifts more proceeds to building projects such as K-12 schools and higher education campuses.

 

Record Number Of Sea Turtles Found On Cape Hatteras

269 turtle nests have so far been spotted, 15 more than a record set two years ago for that stretch of the Outer Banks.

The Virginian-Pilot reports all but nine of the federal seashore's nests belong to loggerheads, a threatened species in the U.S. The other nests are of green sea turtles, also listed as threatened.
