A regional economic development group has alerted Greensboro police of possible financial irregularities at the organization.

Susan Danielson is a spokeswoman for the police department. She says the department's fraud unit is awaiting the results of an internal audit from the Piedmont Triad Partnership before it launches an investigation of its own.

“The results of that internal audit will help us determine whether or not a crime has been committed. So we'd have to see their numbers and we'd have to learn their business practices in order to begin our investigation.”

Danielson says the department first learned of the allegations Wednesday. No charges have been filed. The partnership says in a release that the possible irregularities occurred under former CEO David Powell, who left the organization in February. Powell could not be reached for comment.

The Piedmont Triad Partnership works to lure businesses and jobs to the area through public and private funds.
