A lithium-ion battery pouch manufacturer has selected Davidson County for its first operation in America.
Gov. Roy Cooper's office announced Tuesday, Dai Nippon Printing, or DNP, will build a manufacturing facility in the city of Linwood. This will create around 350 new jobs in Davidson County.
The Japanese company could bring new opportunities to nearby areas like the city of Lexington. Mayor Jason Hayes says this goes beyond just new jobs.
"It grows the population, it grows the tax base, it increases opportunities for retail outlets as well, and retail spending," he says. "It's really just a tremendously positive impact overall."
Hayes says this will also help fill a void left by the textile and furniture industry that dominated the area in the 90s.
According to the governor's office, the average salary for the new jobs will be just over $50,000 a year.
DNP will spend $233 million to build the new manufacturing facility.
