Aung San Suu Kyi, who won the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, has come under intense international criticism for her muted response to the army's campaign of terror against the Muslim minority.

Hundreds of thousands of refugees languish in the camps. UNICEF estimates that more than half the refugees are children. Some aid groups have warned that these children could become a lost generation.

A new report on the mass killings of Rohingya Muslims suggests six Myanmarese commanders be prosecuted. Investigators also say civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi did nothing to stop the attacks.

This week marks a year since hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled attacks in Myanmar. As refugees, they now live in huge camps in Bangladesh, with difficult conditions made worse by monsoon rains.

A year ago, Myanmar soldiers launched what the U.S. and the U.N. say was a campaign of ethnic cleansing against Rohingya Muslims. "I would rather drink poison than go back to Myanmar," says a refugee.

The sanctions target four mid-level commanders and two units — but they failed to satisfy senators and activists alike, who say the U.S. has a ways to go to hold Myanmar accountable for its crimes.

A group called Translators Without Borders is developing a glossary to help humanitarian workers in Bangladesh communicate with Rohingya refugees.

Despite international outrage, a Myanmar court has ruled that a case can proceed against Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who were arrested while reporting on the killings of 10 Rohingya men last fall.

"All this likeness of Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi, it's all make-believe," says the director of a civic organization in Yangon. "And now we know the real Aung San Suu Kyi."

Members of the Muslim minority group who fled rape, murder and brutality in Myanmar now face different threats in southeastern Bangladesh: flooding, landslides and disease.

"So much of what I've seen is, quite frankly, just deeply disturbing," U.S. aid chief Mark Green said after visiting a camp for Rohingya in Myanmar. For some, "this is the only reality they know."

Amnesty International alleges a Rohingya insurgent group killed dozens of villagers last August. Afterward, Myanmar launched a campaign that one U.N. official says bears the "hallmarks of genocide."
