Sandy Waugh Bradshaw was a Greensboro-based flight attendant from North Carolina. She died on United Flight 93 when it was hijacked and crashed into a Pennsylvania field.

Twenty-five years later, her mother, Patricia Waugh, sat down with WFDD’s Morning Host Robin Lambert.

Interview Highlights

ROBIN LAMBERT: When you first learned of the plane crashes on 9/11, you've told me before that you weren't immediately worried because you didn't think Sandy was on any of those flights. Take me back to that morning, how you found out and how the morning unfolded.

PATRICIA WAUGH: Well, my mother called me and said, "Do you have your TV on?" And I said, "No." And she said, "Turn it on. Some planes have crashed."

And, you know, I didn't really know at that time about Sandy. Then Phil [Sandy's husband] called me.

He said, "Sandy's plane's been hijacked."

She [Sandy] told him that they were boiling water, and she said, "I have to go now. We're running to the front."

So, I don't know what she did, if she just tossed the phone, if she laid it down. She didn't turn it off, and he could hear all the commotion going on in the background, and then it just stopped, and so he said then he knew what had happened.

LAMBERT: The field in Shanksville, where the plane went down. You've said you feel close to Sandy there.

WAUGH: I do. I just am drawn there. I like to go up and just kind of sit, watch people come and go, and sometimes I'll talk to them, and they'll ask me questions and things, and I feel like they go away from there with a different feeling than to just come and look.

LAMBERT: As the horror of 9/11 unfolded live on TV 25 years ago, Americans vowed to never forget. Do you think we've forgotten?

WAUGH: Yes. I think. Of course, with us it's different. You know, with people that don't know anybody that was involved or those kind of things, it kind of just goes away sort of, and I understand that.

And as time passes, people forget about things. Hopefully we haven't forgotten too much that we might let something happen to us again.
