Freightliner is hoping those layoffs will be temporary until demand for trucks rebounds.

The division of Daimler Trucks North America says the layoffs of about 940 workers will take effect Friday. Laid-off workers will receive pay and benefits for nearly two months after the cuts take effect.  

Freightliner says it will still employ about 2,200 employees at its heavy-truck plant in the Rowan County town of Cleveland, which is southwest of Winston-Salem.

According to a news release, the company is making the cuts in anticipation of a soft market for heavy trucks in 2016.

Freightliner said in May it would add more than 600 jobs and a third production shift at its plant in nearby Mount Holly, which makes medium-duty trucks.
