A Yadkin County lawyer is joining the North Carolina Court of Appeals. Valerie Zachary of Yadkinville will fill the vacant seat.

Gov. Pat McCrory announced Thursday he appointed Zachary to succeed Judge Sanford Steelman, who retired last week after 12 years on the intermediate-level appeals court. The 15-judge court sits in three-judge panels to hear cases.

Zachary is a Harvard Law School graduate and has been a partner in the Zachary Law Offices, where she works with husband Lee Zachary, a first-term Republican state representative.

Zachary's judicial seat will be up for re-election in November 2016.
