Yadkin Riverkeeper has hired a new executive director and a new riverkeeper. This comes as the non-profit enters its second decade protecting the health of the Yadkin River.

The Winston-Salem-based organization has hired Lexington native Edgar Miller as its new executive director, according to a statement from Board President Vanessa Zboreak.

For the past 17 years, Miller has served as Director of Government Relations for the Conservation Trust for North Carolina, lobbying on behalf of the state's 24 land trusts.

He's also been involved in local tourism and recreation developments along the river.

Miller replaces outgoing executive director Terri Pratt.

Boone native Brian Fannon will take over as riverkeeper, a role that involves monitoring water quality and keeping tabs on runoff from surrounding farms and construction projects. He succeeds former riverkeeper Will Scott.

Both Miller and Fannon say they'd like to raise the profile of the Yadkin River, which provides drinking water to thousands of Winston-Salem residents.
