Employees at a Starbucks in Boone recently voted to unionize.

In early April, employees sent a letter to company officials declaring their intent to organize. It laid out their concerns and demands. They said they want to be seen as “partners” and asked for higher pay and access to more comprehensive healthcare coverage.

This past Saturday, the National Labor Relations Board held an election at the Boone location. Soon after, employees shared the results on Twitter.

The vote was 33 to 2 in favor of unionizing. The group known as Starbucks United Boone thanked the community for supporting its efforts.

The store on Pride Drive and Blowing Rock Road is the first Starbucks in North Carolina to become a certified union.
