The Winston Salem Police Department is sending condolences to police in Las Vegas, after a mass shooting on Sunday night. The department also wants to reassure residents that it's safe to attend events in the city.

In a statement, Police Chief Catrina Thompson says she personally reached out to Clark County Nevada Sheriff Joseph Lombardo to offer thoughts and prayers on behalf of her and the entire community.

The department also addressed any fears people may have of attending the Dixie Classic Fair, which draws about 300,000 people annually. It promised a sufficient police presence at the fair, as well as at the concert Monday evening that precedes it.

The department says there will be adequate staffing to attend to emergency calls and service as usual. It also aims to review its protocols for future events, saying that safety of the public is paramount.
